Learning a piece and practising it
Lessons cover the piece you are learning and how to practise it. You might work on hearing a phrase, counting a rhythm, or finding a more comfortable movement at the keyboard.
In lessons, JP listens to you play, demonstrates, and works through difficulties with you. You have time to ask questions and try things again. You leave knowing what to work on and how to approach it.
A first introduction to the piano
For children or adults beginning from scratch, lessons bring reading, rhythm, listening, and coordination together at the instrument. Musical understanding develops alongside the physical skills of playing.
A return to playing
If you learned years ago, you may remember more than you expect. Lessons help you reconnect with those skills, address gaps, and choose music that makes you want to sit down at the piano again.
Further study
For students already playing, lessons can explore technical difficulties, interpretation, tone, and the structure of a piece. Bring repertoire you’re studying, an examination or performance to prepare for, or a problem you haven’t been able to solve.

Known as JP, he combines detailed musical teaching with an understanding that people learn differently. An explanation, demonstration, or practice approach that helps one student may need rethinking for another.
JP helps students understand the choices they make at the piano and work through difficulties on their own.

How online lessons work
Lessons take place by video, with you at your own piano or keyboard. JP teaches in real time: listening, demonstrating, discussing the music, and helping you work through it.
To begin, you need your instrument, a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, and a stable internet connection. A camera position that shows your hands and keyboard helps JP see how you’re playing.
The introductory meeting or first lesson is an opportunity to check the setup together.

Before your first lesson
Can children take lessons online?
Yes. JP teaches children as well as teens and adults. When you get in touch, include your child’s age and any previous musical experience. The introductory conversation is a chance to discuss their readiness, the setup, and how you can help them get started.
Do I need to read music already?
No. Complete beginners are welcome. If you already play, JP will work with your existing knowledge and help you develop it further.
Can lessons help with advanced repertoire or exams?
Yes. Lessons can include detailed work on technique, interpretation, musicianship, and preparation for examinations or performances. Tell JP what you’re studying and any dates you’re working toward.
How does scheduling work across time zones?
Send your city, time zone, and a few days and times that could work. JP teaches from Vancouver on Pacific time and will confirm available options with you.
What happens when I get in touch?
You’ll receive lesson information by email, and JP will review your request personally. You can then agree on a time for an introductory lesson or meeting.
What would you like to play?
Tell JP a little about yourself or your child: age, piano experience, and the music you’re interested in. Include your city, time zone, and a few possible lesson times.
